Congratulations to Christy Clark, who won the Liberal leadership race on the weekend.
As B.C.’s premier-in-waiting pending a by-election that will give her a seat in the Legislature, Ms. Clark faces many challenges that range from re-establishing unity within the Liberal party’s ranks to initiating changes she talked about in her victory speech Saturday night.
Her campaign platform of putting an emphasis on the well-being of families and communities obviously won the hearts of Liberal members, and it struck a chord with the log-harvest sector.
In this layer cake we call the forest industry, logging and trucking contractors, subcontractors and their suppliers, many of them second and even third-generation business people, are the economic backbone of almost 300 communities across B.C.
Collectively, they have investments of more than $2 billion, and issue paycheques worth hundreds of millions of dollars every year to thousands of forestry and supply company workers.
We look forward to working with Premier Clark on a variety of issues that are vital to the well-being of this sector, including final steps to make the Forest Service Providers Protection Act truly workable, discussions on tenure reform, improvements to BC Timber Sales and other initiatives that will build stability and prosperity for working families and their communities.
